Adele, Rita Ora, Pink, Alicia Keys, Taylor Swift, Miranda Lambert for ELLE 'Women in Music' Issue May 2013 - First Look

For this year’s Women in Music Issue, the ELLE team traveled from L.A. to London to capture Adele, Alicia Keys, and Rita Ora for the rotating covers. Also featured in this issue are Pink, Taylor Swift, Miranda Lambert and Jessie Ware.

 

Photographer Thomas Whiteside: "We photographed Adele at L.A.'s iconic EastWest Studios, where Frank Sinatra recorded his greatest hits."  

ELLE Creative Director Joe Zee: "The set reflected Adele's retro crooner style perfectly."  

Whiteside: "It was also my birthday, and she sang 'Happy Birthday' to me—best present ever!"  

Assistant Fashion Editor Sarah Schussheim: "Across the street, we shot Alicia on the rooftop of Siren Studios. She radiated cool New York glamour, relaxing and singing along to a Grace Jones album."  

Photographer Doug Inglish: "Alicia brought her two-year-old son, Egypt, and played with him constantly."  
Whiteside: "We then flew to London to shoot Rita Ora. Fans kept asking for her autograph—she even stopped to dedicate a soccer ball to someone’s dog."  

Schussheim: "Rita loved hairstylist Ken O'Rourke's whimsical headpieces. She kept instagramming selfless."  

Zee: "Including one of her in Mickey Mouse gear! Not many people get so excited to have their picture taken in whiskers—Rita definitely has a special aura."

PINK

Taylor on what inspires her songs: “All these emotions, everything that’s said and all your experience, that’s what inspires the first flicker of a song. It’s hard being a human being.”

Alicia on her Girl On Fire album: “There’s not one thing about Girl on Fire that’s like any of my others. I’m in a totally new state of mind…This album is like saying I am who I am, not who you want me to be.”

Miranda on staying true to herself: “My message is to be your own person, always- whether you’re a stay-at-home mom or a superstar…We all bring something different.”
